Four new 1200m³/m dedusters to be delivered before Christmas

STS are finishing the year on a high with their biggest value single order to date, worth over £1,000,000.00.

CPL, who operate the Boulby Mine in Loftus, North Yorkshire, have placed orders for four new HBKK1/600-14-2 filter units and can expect delivery before the end of the year. The filters, complete with a GAL9-55/55 fan station and silencers, are each able to filter 1200 cubic metres per minute of dust laden air, achieving a cleaning efficiency of 99.995% resulting in a clean air value of less than 0.2mg/m³.

The units operate a continuous cleaning system whereby the cartridge filters are cleaned at regular intervals with a pulse of compressed air during operation. The resulting dust “cake” drops into a chain conveyor at the bottom of the filter unit and is transported to an inclined screw which deposits the dust into a 1 tonne bag or directly onto a material conveyor.

The filter units are manufactured by our partner CFT in Germany and incorporate Korfmann fans which ensure efficient and reliable operation in the harsh environment of the mine.

Sandvik Austria turn to STS to provide GRP ventilation solution

STS have worked with Sandvik for over 10 years providing lightweight GRP ventilation ducting, so when they were looking for a manufacturer to provide large, bespoke GRP ducting for a ventilation system on a road heading machine in a Germany, they knew where to come.

STS supplied a new design telescopic unit allowing for continuous mining and advancing and custom-made GRP ducts for an overlap system in limited space. The new ducts, measuring over 5m in length and transitioning from round to oval were produced on custom moulds (from Fineline) to Sandvik’s own design. Using in-house CAD, the customers’ designs were converted into moulds and the GRP ducts produced to the exact shapes required to fit into the limited space above and around the complex mining equipment.

COVID Lockdown update

Schauenburg Technical Solutions has continued to operate throughout the lockdown as a key supplier to industries within the mining, tunnelling and construction sectors. Although seeing an initial slowdown in the demand for our Novoform product this has quickly picked up again and, helped by strong sales in Europe, we are back in full production and are happy to report that we have not had to make any redundancies.

Woodsmith Mine development continues to progress

The new mine development near Whitby continues to progress with the main infrastructure installations for the shaft sinking programme well underway. Schauenburg Technical Solutions are pleased to have been selected to provide the service shaft dust extraction and Shaft Boring Roadheader ventilation hook up ducting contracts. Working closely with DMC and the installation contractor, Salko, we are providing the steel ducting, supports and fixings to link the Korfmann fan packages to the SBR. At the same time the dust extraction ducting will also be installed linking the CFT dust control package to key dust extraction points in the shaft.

North Bristol Relief Sewer Tunnel underway

Schauenburg Technical Solutions are supplying the TBM ventilation ducting and fan hook up package to contractors J. Murphy and Sons, for the North Bristol Relief Sewer Tunnel currently underway for Wessex Water. STS were the preferred choice helped by our custom cassette packing system where we supply prepacked ducting on our unique FRP inners which allow quick changeovers at the TBM. The FRP inners are manufactured in FRAS (fire retardant anti-static) material, are lightweight and re-useable. The pre-packed ducting is collected from our Gainsborough factory in lots of fifteen to twenty and taken to site. The ducting installs quickly into the TBM cassette by fitting the FRP inner onto the cassette central tube. Once the cassette is empty, the FRP inner is removed and returned to STS while collecting the next lot of ducting. It is then repacked with another cassette duct ready for a future collection. This cassette packing service is available for all sizes of ducting and eliminates the worry and problems surrounding safe storage of ducting and the packing of cassettes on site.

Novoform in USA and Canada

Novoform was officially launched at the World of Concrete show in Nevada at the end of January. The product is initially being stocked in Colorado and West Virginia. The plan is to build a network of stockists in the major conurbations on the Eastern Seaboard and down into the Sth West. A number of people have been recruited to introduce the product to the USA marketplace, with additional resource being added to the Canadian operation in Nth Bay, Ontario.

Launch of Novoform in North America

Novoform was on show at the World of Concrete Show, held this year in Las Vegas from the 4th to the 7th of February, and was well received by visitors from all over the world. The stand and display were put together by our sister company in the USA, Schauenburg Flexadux Corporation, and attended by staff from both the Fairmont, West Virginia and Grand Junction, Colorado branches as well as our own MD, Chris Simpson.

The show generated enquiries from countries around the world ranging from Australia to the UAE and significant interest was shown within the North American markets which has led to an upturn in quote requests from both the USA and Canadian building contractors.

STS deliver next stage of ducting for the North Yorkshire polyhalite mine development

Schauenburg Technical Solutions have delivered to DMC Mining the first stage of hook up ventilation ducting which will allow connection of the fans to the MTS shaft at the Woodsmith Mine development in North Yorkshire.

The package consists of a series of steel 1200mm diameter steel ducts complete with connecting flanges, support brackets and fasteners for both the supply and exhaust fans of the shaft which is planned to reach a depth of nearly 400m.

Due to the location of the mine, within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, all steel work is painted in a dark green finish to minimise visual impact on the landscape.

Four new shafts are being sunk by specialist shaft sinking contractor DMC Mining (UK) Ltd comprising two main shafts each extending over 1500m deep and two further shafts up to 450m deep for the Materials Transport System (MTS) tunnel.

This tunnel is being driven by three separate Strabag TBMs and is designed to deliver the polyhalite product underground, direct to a materials handling facility being purpose built at Wilton before despatching from the old Redcar Bulk Handling Terminal on the River Tees.

STS have already supplied the ventilation ducting for both MTS shafts being sunk using Galloway rigs and STV are supplying ducting for the shaft boring road headers (SBR) on both main shafts and 1.6m diameter flat lay ducting designed to be cassette packed for the TBMs in the MTS tunnel.

CFT are supplying the complete temporary shaft sinking ventilation packages comprising Korfmann fans, WAT cooling systems and DFT dust collection systems. The packages are containerised and include comprehensive sound attenuation measures and state-of-the-art E-Houses with all switchgear and control and moniotoring systems. Korfmann Luftechnik, WAT Wärme-Austausch Technik and DFT Deichmann Filter Technik are all sister companies of CFT within the CFH Group.

Each of the two main shafts required:

  • A supply air fan station capable of delivering 29.2 m³/s of fresh air at 8700 Pa total static pressure plus pressure losses for inlet and discharge silencers, baffles and screens, gas heating system and cooling system.
  • An exhausting air fan station capable of removing 46.2 m³/s of exhaust air at 1250 Pa total static pressure plus pressure losses for inlet and discharge silencers, baffles and screens.
  • Two air-cooled chiller units each rated 1000 kW capacity to chill and supply 85 m³/h of water with from 12°C to 1°C to the air coolers.
  • Two air coolers each rated 1000 kW cooling capacity to cool an air flow of 32.3 m³/s from 22.7°C WB inlet temperature to 3°C.
  • An E-House including a transformer to convert from 11 kV to 400 V, electrical distribution equipment and PLC and VFD control panels for both the fan stations PLC controls and switchgear for the cooling system.
  • A Stench Gas Alarm System to warn mining personnel in case of an emergency in a noisy environment.
  • A dust collector type KJF 1500/18-54 with 54 compact polyester felt filter elements with a total surface area of 205 m² capable of handling 23,785 m³/h of dust laden air.
  • A dust collection fan located on the clean gas side rated at 23,785 m³/h flow and 3,800 Pa pressure drop directly driven by a 45.0 kW motor.

Further considerations included; vibration and temperature monitoring of the fans and variable speed controllers, a separate air-conditioning system for the E-House with temperature monitoring, noise dampening to minimise environmental impact.

The MTS shaft packages are similar but have no cooling or dust collection systems.
